“The right to life of women in Pakistan is conditional on their obeying social norms and traditions.”

There is much talk about moral relativism, about understanding and allow for cultural difference, and religious plurality. And I would agree to some of the arguments, and in fact make some of them myself.
But, the fact of that matter is that culture is but the clothing that we wear. It is our genes, our genetic humanity that makes us human. And those genes are the same no matter what culture you originate from.
We must always be careful not to get so carried away with Cultural allowances, that we lose sight of the value of each INDIVIDUAL persons humanity. If a Culture believes that the Family takes precedence over the individual, then it may only enforce it’s rules on those within its ranks who individually decide to follow them.
Something tells me, these girls would rather live.
In Paris, a girl was burnt alive because she was raped. The suburbs of Europe are filled with Muslims who abide by these rules, and the governments are so fucking corrupt that they let it happen.
There is a sad string of thought running through liberal camps these days. It goes something like this, “we shouldn’t be so arrogant as to impose our way of life onto other cultures. The Neo-con always thinks that everyone in the world, if given the chance will want what we have, but that is wrong and immoral.”
Case in Point: They believe that Muslims just don’t have it in them to want democracy. It’s not something in their culture.
If a pundant looked at European Medieval culture, they’d see the same level of fundamentalism in Christian Nations, that currently exists in Muslim Nations. Would that indicate the Christians just aren’t of good democratic stock?
It’s an example of Shear, subtle, and complete un-self-acknowledged racism. The kind so prevalent in middle class white society.
Maybe, just maybe, democracy hasn’t thrived in the Middle East, because the west keeps propping up dictators who brutalize their own populations and promote fundamentalism as a tool to subjugate the people.
Does it make me a Neo-Con to believe that the individual’s rights are sacred? If so, sign me up. (Never thought I’d say that.)
Human beings are by nature, passionately retarded. We get worked up … and then lynch people. It’s one the fundamental realities of who we are, and it is up to us, and good government, to curb those tendencies in what ever culture they crawl out of.
“In countries where Islam is practiced, they’re called honor killings, but dowry deaths and so-called crimes of passion have a similar dynamic in that the women are killed by male family members and the crimes are perceived as excusable or understandable,” said Widney Brown, advocacy director for Human Rights Watch.
Humans cannot be trusted to leave one another alone. And our cultures, religions, and “groups” are all agonists to the crime.
“Females in the family—mothers, mothers-in-law, sisters, and cousins—frequently support the attacks. It’s a community mentality,” said Zaynab Nawaz, a program assistant for women’s human rights at Amnesty International.
